Left Hand Trailing Spring Hanger Bracket
03/06/2024
  Highslide JS
A better picture this week of drilling the holes to fasten the left hand trailing spring hanger bracket. All 4 outer holes have been drilled, we now need to work out how to drill the inner holes as we will have to drill upwards due to access constraints. The frames now need to be moved so that we can access the right hand side bracket.

Dragbox Drilling Jig
10/06/2024
  Highslide JS
Today we took delivery of the dragbox drilling jig manufactured by Tybro in Kirkby-in-Ashfield. We have to fasten the dragbox and the hind beam gussets to the rear of the frame extensions at the back of the frames. Fitted bolts need to go through all 3 components. Due to the shape of the gussets, it is not possible to drill/ream the bolt holes to final size so we will need to drill/ream the bolt holes in 2 operations. First the dragbox to the frame extensions, second the gussets. By using this drilling jig, the holes should then line up on assembly. The part marked 26.5 mm is a Boneham and Turner Drill Bush. It will ensure that a 26.5 mm twist drill is lined up correctly. The 27mm part is a bush for reaming to 27mm. Later this week, the frames should be moved so we can work on both sides of the frames.

Cylinders and Valve Gear Design
19/06/2024
  Highslide JS
Will has been working on developing the 3D model of Hengist's cylinders and valve gear. We intend to adopt the same modification as recently installed on 71000 Duke of Gloucester whereby an extension cast into the rear cylinder cover provides a support for the front of the slidebars. In order to create the new design, we need to model the existing BR design where the front of the slidebars were not supported. We know from Bill Harvey's book (shedmaster at Norwich in Britannia days) that there was movement at the end of the slidebars. Will has modelled the rear cover, swab mop case and slidebars. He has started working on the piston valve heads in the steam chest - above the cylinder.
