For the job, we were counselled by Dave Reynolds who was Chief Mechanical Engineer at the East Lancs Railway. Dave used to work at Crewe Works. Dave applied a coat of engineers blue to the sides of the saddle. |

Next, the saddle was lowered back into the frames. Once in situ, the Monday gang set to and fully tightened all of the 96 bolts that fasten the saddle to the frame. After tightening, the bolts were immediately loosened and the saddle lifted back out of the frames. With the saddle out of the way, the frames can be inspected. The high spots on the frames are identified by the traces of engineers blue that have transferred to the frames. |

Then it was back to the saddle and a new application of engineers blue. This saddle was then reinserted into the frame. This cycle occurred 40 times over 5 days! There is a short timelapse video of a cycle which you can see by clicking this link |
