Mechanical Lubricators
10/03/2025

A long time ago, the project managed to obtain a pair of mechanical lubricators. Chris and Roy have started to clean them up. The one in the red box is a 12 feed lubricator and provides very viscous, cylinder grade oil to the main cylinder and valve cylinder. As the oil is very viscous, the lubricator is provided with a steam feed for heating the oil. The one on the right, which Roy is cleaning, is a 8 feed mechanical lubricator which only needs to be fitted with 4 pumps. This is filled with less viscous axlebox grade oil and lubricates the slidebars and piston rods.

The hind cylinder cover pattern is now nearing completion at Greenbank Patterns. They have now completed the part for the extension that will support the front of the slidebars. This is a modification to the original design which allowed the slidebars to move slightly, possibly contributing to poor piston ring wear.

On the evening of 24 March CTL Seal and the Standard Steam Locomotive Co Ltd hosted a visit of members from The Welding Institute. Arron, Sales Director of CTL Seal, gave a presentation of an overview of CTL Seal which was followed by Geoff with a presentation on the Hengist project. After which the group was split into two, one led by Arron; the other group by Richard, CTL Seal Welding Engineer, for a tour of the works, the fabrication shop, machine shop, ending in the Assembly Shop by 72010 Hengist. An informative and enjoyable evening, “everyone was very impressed with the loco and CTL Seal”.

Thanks to Mark Roughsedge for organising the event from The Welding Institute.
